The Road To Success!

1. Legal requirements to becoming an Approved Driving Instructor:
You will need to have held a full U.K. or European (EU, European Economic Area (EEA)) unrestricted licence for at least four out of the last six years prior to entering the register after qualifying.

2. You have not been disqualified from driving in the four years prior to being entered on the register.

3. You must be a 'fit and proper' person to have your name entered on the register. This requires that you agree to have a Criminal Records Bureau enhanced level check done on your background.  The DSA will use this to determine whether you are indeed suitable to be entered onto the register.

4. You must apply for registration within 12 months of passing your final test
More information can be found on the Driving Standards Agency website:-

Part One:

The Part 1 test for prospective driving instructors calls for a higher standard of knowledge than that of a learner driver.  The test consists of two parts; a multiple choice section and a hazard perception test. You must pass both parts at the same time.

Multiple choice questions:

This part of the test will last 90 minutes during which time you will be asked 100 questions split into four bands:

1 - Road procedure

2 - Traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians, mechanical knowledge

3 - Driving test, disabilities, law

4 - Publications, instructional techniques

Hazard Perception:

The test itself consists of 14 video clips each lasting about one minute. The clips feature various types of hazards, such as vehicles, pedestrians and road conditions. You should respond by pressing a mouse button as soon as you see a hazard developing that may result in the driver having to take some form of action, such as changing speed or direction. The earlier the developing hazard is spotted, and a response made, the higher the score. The test contains 15 scoreable hazards and candidates can score up to five marks on each hazard.

Pass marks:

You must pass both parts of the theory test during the same sitting to obtain an overall pass result. The overall pass mark for the multiple choice part of the test is 85% (85 questions answered correctly). However, you must reach a minimum mark of 80% (20 correct questions) in each of the four bands given above. It is therefore possible for you to get an overall mark of 85% or higher but still fail the examination because you have not gained the minimum of 80% in any one or more of the four bands.
