The Part 3 test measures your ability to give
effective instruction and is generally considered the
most difficult of the three qualifying tests.
Make sure you are well prepared before
attempting the test. As with Part 2, you are
limited to three attempts.
Objective Of The Test
The objective of the test is to assess
the quality of your instruction and your ability
to pass your knowledge on to pupils. The test is
in two parts, each of which lasts about 30
minutes. You must pass both parts on the same
test. You will be asked to demonstrate your
knowledge and ability by giving practical
driving instruction to the examiner who will
take the role of a pupil.
The examiner will select two of the
following options:
• A novice or partly
trained pupil;
• A pupil who is about test
standard;
• A qualified driver who is
undertaking driver development training.
The Test
For each of the roles, the examiner will
select a test which will include a pre-set
combination of two of the exercises listed
below:
• Safety precautions on entering the car
and explanation of the controls
• Moving off
and making normal stops
• Reversing into
limited openings to the right or left
• Turning the vehicle round in the road to face
the opposite direction using forward and reverse
gears
• Parking close to the kerb using
forward and reverse gears
• How to make an
emergency stop and practical instruction in the
use of mirrors
• Approaching and turning
corners
• Judgement of speed, making progress
and general road positioning
• Dealing with
road junctions
• Dealing with crossroads
• Dealing with pedestrian crossings and giving
signals in a clear and unmistakable manner by
indicator and by arm
• Overtaking, meeting and
crossing the path of other road users, allowing
adequate clearance

Trainee (Pink)
Licence:
Before taking your Part 3 test
you can apply for a trainee licence to gain
experience in teaching real learners.
Most
trainee instructors (PDI's or Potential Driving
Instructors) take advantage of the trainee
licence option before taking their Part 3 test.
This licence allows them to gain experience of
teaching real learners in preparation of this
third and final part of the qualifying process.
To obtain a trainee licence you would need to
have passed the Part 2 test and completed a
minimum of 40 hours training to prepare you to
teach learners the correct syllabus. Having
completed the 40 hours, you would then be able
to join either a local or national driving
school and start work.
As a rule of your
trainee licence, you would then have to complete
a further 20 hours training within the first 12
weeks of being on your pink licence.
When you
pass Part 2 you are given an application form
for the trainee licence. You will need to
send off two photographs and the current fee of
£125.00.
