How to become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI)

The qualifying examination consists of three parts:

Part 1: Theory – This consists of a selection of multiple choice questions and a video based hazard perception test.

Part 2: Personal Driving  - This section consists of an eyesight test followed by a practical test of your personal driving ability.

Part 3: Instructional Ability – The third and final part consists of a practical test of your ability to instruct.

You must pass all three parts of the examination in this order and within two years of passing the Part 1 theory test

Requirements before starting training:

Before starting the training, you will need to register with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA). You should apply for a starter pack, known as the ADI 14, ‘Your Road to Becoming an Approved Driving Instructor’.

This pack will have all the information needed to get started. You can obtain the pack by contacting the DSA on 0870 121 4202 at a cost of approximately £5.00.  If ordering by telephone, you will need a credit card or debit card to make payment.
Alternately, you can send a cheque made payable to the 'Driving Standards Agency' with your details to: Instructor services and registration team (ADI), The Axis Building, 112 Upper Parliament Street, Nottingham. Before the DSA will allow you to enter the register you will require a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check. You can order the forms for this by phone on 0115 901 2801.

How we can help you achieve success:

David, our Instructor Trainer, has many years experience in delivering Driving Instructor Training (ADI), Fleet driver training and Advanced Driver Training. He is also able to offer a check test course consisting of three hours for current Approved Driving Instructors.  He has held a senior position in one of Britain’s largest national driving schools and is not only *ORDIT registered but also holds advanced driver credentials such as the NVQ (Level 3) in Driving Tuition among others. David has both the skill and determination to help you succeed in your new chosen career.

* ORDIT is the Official Register of Driving Instructor Trainers.  All members have to have their instruction checked every two years by a special DSA examiner to ensure their training meets the minimum standards required.  ORDIT is currently optional but we hope that it will become compulsory to help raise the standards throughout the industry.
